Glasgow is the biggest city in Scotland, the 3^rd most populous in the UK, and the economic power in the north. The city first became a place of importance after the establishment of the University of Glasgow in the 15^th century. That environment became essential for the latter Scottish Enlightenment. In the 18^th century, thanks to the transatlantic trade, the city turned into an economic hub. Very important industries to this day are shipbuilding and marine engineering. In modern days this has resulted in the fact that around 40 percent of the whole population of Scotland is living in and around this important city.

Culture

This economic progress and importance of the city has had a very strong bearing on the cultural life of this city. It is home of many activities such as opera, ballet, music, art, press and media.

The city, mainly due to its tradition in education, is home of Mitchell Library- one of the largest reference libraries in Europe. There are housed more than 1.3 million books and a diverse collection of newspapers, magazines and maps.

The city has a very important role in Scottish performing arts. The Scottish Opera, the Scottish Ballet, The national Theater of Scotland, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Scottish Youth Theater are only some of the famous cultural venues situated in the city.
